75th Anniversary Season Grand Opening: SlowDancing / NYCB at Our Studios

Shot at Our Exclusive Studio

As the New York City Ballet kicks off its 75th Anniversary Season in grand style, we are thrilled to present an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the spectacular large-scale video installation, "SlowDancing / NYCB," by acclaimed artist David Michalek. From September 18 through October 1, this captivating installation graces the façade of our prestigious partner, the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center, offering an artistic spectacle like no other.

Co-directed by NYCB Associate Artistic Director Wendy Whelan, "SlowDancing / NYCB" features mesmerizing hyper slow-moving images of 20 of NYCB's exceptional dancers performing iconic moments from the Company's unrivaled repertoire. Wendy Whelan shares her excitement, stating, "As we begin our 75th Anniversary Season, I am thrilled that audiences both inside and outside the theater will have the chance to witness our amazing dancers and our extraordinary repertory in this incredibly unique medium."

This extraordinary project, "SlowDancing / NYCB," was created to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the New York City Ballet. It also represents the Company's forward-looking approach, embracing innovative forms of public outreach, education, and engagement.

"SlowDancing / NYCB" is an evolution of Michalek's earlier masterpiece, "SlowDancing," which made its debut at the Lincoln Center Festival in July 2007. Transforming the façade of the New York State Theater into a dynamic work of art, "SlowDancing" featured a mesmerizing cycle of 45 larger-than-life, hyper-slow-motion portraits of dancers and choreographers from around the world. This groundbreaking work showcased dance artists from diverse backgrounds and styles, all captured in five-second sequences and slowed down to a mesmerizing ten-minute span.

David Michalek, an American visual artist and director, is renowned for his exploration of the contemporary human experience through various mediums, including live performance, filmmaking, photography, and installation. His focus on decelerated time and the interplay of image and sound has led to captivating creations that resonate with audiences worldwide. His work sparks reflection on the concept of slowness in today's fast-paced world.

We invite you to immerse yourself in the artistry of "SlowDancing / NYCB" and experience the magic of the New York City Ballet's 75th Anniversary Season. Join us in celebrating the convergence of dance, visual art, and innovation, captured exclusively at our studios.
